HARRISBURG — An injectable form of naloxone, the life-saving emergency medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, is now available to Pennsylvanians without a prescription.

A standing order by Acting Secretary of Health and Pennsylvania Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson was expanded to include the injectable form.

The nasal spray that has saved countless lives also remains available.

The ZIMHI is a 5-milligram, intra-muscular injection device. It comes as a single-dose, pre-filled syringe or a carton with two cases of the pre-filled syringes, according to an announcement by the Wolf administration.

To obtain naloxone, state residents can simply present a copy of the standing order at their local pharmacy. The order is available online under the opioids section at www.health.pa.gov. Many pharmacies also keep a copy on file, according to the website.

Naloxone is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose by quickly restoring breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. Naloxone can be administered by individuals with or without medical training to help reduce opioid overdose deaths.

It’s also available free for personal use through a statewide mail-based naloxone program in partnership with Prevention Point Pittsburgh and NEXT Distro.
